Cutflowers

Most of René’s Phlox and Delphinium cut flowers wind up being arranged into mixed bouquets.

Some of the flowers are also offered to the open market via flower trade auctions such as the famous Aalsmeer auction in Holland, so there is a small chance you may spot stems of P. 'Natural Feelings' at your local florist, though don't go asking for it by name, as cut flowers are often sold under their less enticing trade names.

René’s world of flowers
05-12-2003 14:56 It’s all very well being based in Holland, the world's cutflower growing capital, but why not take advantage of favorable growing conditions offered closer to the equator?

Influence for and from René’s breeding program is spread all over the world. He spends much time traveling to locations in South America, Africa and Australasia gathering plant material to experiment with. These travels bring him into contact with many other hybridisers, all with their own projects on the go, and the resulting opportunities to trade plants and experience add further to the mix.

In addition to traveling to gather new material, René is also busy keeping tabs on the various nurseries comissioned to grow his varieties for the cut flower market. Nurseries in Equador, Costa Rica, Colombia and California are busy producing his flowers to supply the U.S., while operations in Kenya, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia grow for the European market.

Growing plants in the constant daylight conditions of equatorial regions makes it possible to harvest flower crops all year round.

Not your average plantsman
By Miriam Young
Happily producing successful cut-flower ranges, René van Gaalen had no idea that his cultivars would make such an impact as garden plants. But a character like him can’t hide away forever.
