Other Hostas at Heemskerk

From among his vast array of Hostas, Gerard has a couple of favourites. These are already available to buy.

Hosta 'Guardian Angel'

This very large hosta has an unmistakeable presence with its large heart-shaped leaves which have broad irregular blue-green borders around a cream center, and overlaid in a greenish mist. The foliage, which has a heavy substance, becomes dark-green by mid-summer, when it is topped by tall scapes of white flowers. Introduced in 2002.

Hosta 'Lady Guinevere'

A wonderful brightly colored hosta whos cream centered leaves are set off with irregular dark-green margins and uniquely edged in white. Produces lots of pale lavender flowers detailed with purple anthers. A new introduction in 2004.

Commercial Production
19-01-2004 14:10 After being propagated at the Vitro Westland laboratory where it was discovered, Hosta 'Christmas Candy' is commercially grown in The Netherlands at Heemskerk Vaste Planten, Noordwijk.

Headed up by Gerard Heemskerk, Heemskerk Vaste Planten (meaning Heemskerk Perennial Plants) is the nursery responsible for growing the crop of Hosta ‘Christmas Candy’ until ready for export. Situated in Noordwijk, near Holland’s coastline, it is a family run business in its second generation.

The current owner, Gerard has worked there since leaving school, and is now one of Hollands leading growers of new varieties of Hosta, Iris and Hemerocallis.

"Together strong for environmentally concious horticulture"

The Heemskerk nursery is a member of the environment project for ornamental horticulture.

Heemskerk Vaste Planten  operates a strictly organic production policy. Plants are fed using local animal manure and compost they make from vegetative matter and bark from the nearby woods.
