Great plants for moist, shady areas.
General information Ligularia performs best in shady or partly shady borders. Too much sun will cause the leaves to wilt in the afternoon, even if the soil is moist. The plants will recover later in the evening and be normal again by morning. Although excessive sun will not kill the plants, they won't look their best. The best thing to do is to move them to cooler place with more shade.
Soil This Ligularia hybrid prefers a rich, and above all, a constantly moist soil. Positioning alongside a pond or stream provides perfect soil conditions.
On the patio
Ligularia has, until now, been out of bounds to the patio gardener. L. dentata, L. x hessei, L. przewalskii, and L. stenocephala all grow too large to be planted in a pot, but L. Little Lantern actually has a good habit for this purpose. Keeping the soil moist might be a challenge though. Using a plastic or a coated terracotta pot together with a rich compost that holds water well is your best bet.
The plant can be kept in the pot during winter in a place where it is not exposed to extreme frost.
