On the walls

Some of the many awards and qualifications proudly displayed in Helmut's office.

These medals are awarded by the German Nurseryman's Association for supply of outstandingly good plants to an exhibition.

An honorable diploma in garden design, from Nantes in France.

As a "Gärtenmeister", Helmut is qualified to train horticulture students at his nursery.

You might recognise some of these books. Less obvious from this picture is the fact they are all translated into German!

Helmut Stade
02-12-2003 11:29 A successful businessman with numerous achievements and a healthy lust for life.
By Chris Matthijsse

Helmut shows off a bronze-leaved ligularia.

As the second generation owner of the Stade Staudenkulturen nursery in Borken-Marbeck, Germany, Helmut Stade presides over propagation and production of about 3,000 varieties, and therefore knows a thing or two when it comes to spotting interesting perennials.

Although he may not be deliberately breeding new plants, Helmut has certainly spotted a few gems over the years, a fact illustrated by the 48 varieties listed in the Stade catalogue which originated on the nursery.

He is a man with a professional approach to business and a lust for life that leads him to persue a variety of hobbies both in and away from the nursery.

As you enter his office, you are immediately struck by the many pictures, plaques and certificates displayed on the walls. Ask him to explain these and you will be kept busy for hours with fascinating tales of Helmut’s diverse range of interests and achievements.

From dog breeding to football, Helmut has a picture to show, a story to tell and often an award to cap it all. He is very much into his job, but is also a firm believer in the necessity of having interests outside of work to give the mind a break.
