15-12-2003 11:47 Jan van Winsen created E. 'Razzmatazz' with the intention of supplying it as a cut-flower.
By Miriam Young

Jan van Winsen working hard in the greenhouse. He has just a few hours to cut thousands of stems and prepare them for the auction.

Jan van Winsen's business is growing plants (mainly annuals) from seed and selling them at the famous flower auction in Aalsmeer, Holland.

Occasionally he dabbles with selecting unusual seedlings to produce new varieties, and it was in such a way that Echinacea ‘Razzmatazz’ came about.

Jan stops cutting flowers for a moment to check out the new "Darwin PlantSpotters" tag design. He's impressed!

However, Jan is more concerned with the everyday business of producing cutflowers than breeding groundbreaking perennials, so this may be the last we see of him - but then again, you never know!
