Phlox 'Empty Feelings'
The original Feelings Phlox.

These plants go through the motions of producing flowers but never get any further than the narrow bracts that protect the flowers as they are forming.

As no flower forms, the plant tries again and again, eventually producing more and more bracts until a large filled plume is formed.   The plumes provide form and colour for many weeks. Given mild conditions they can last for up to 3 months, though the colour will fade over this period.

While not being ornamental in their own right in a conventional sense, they provide an ideal foil for other brightly coloured flowers, as well as a huge talking point!

Phlox 'Pleasant Feelings'
29-09-2004 11:29 It's a plant guaranteed to raise a few eyebrows, but then again, what do you expect from René van Gaalen?
By Miriam Young

Phlox 'Pleasant Feelings' is the latest release from René's series of flowerless varieties.

It comes from an ongoing breeding program in which he uses chemicals and other means to induce mutations.

The plants in the Feelings™ series were all originally bred with the cutflower market in mind, and so meet the sought-after criteria of having strong stems and very long-lasting colour. In this aspect, the Feelings™ range excels beyond all expectation, as the ‘flowers’ hold their colour for up to six weeks in a vase, and even longer if left on the plants!

Following hot on the heels of 'Empty Feelings' and 'Midnight Feelings', 'Pleasant Feelings' never produces flower, but is topped instead with plumes of green bracts.

A very subtle effect which was initially developed for use as a cut flower in mixed bouquets, but with a little imagination can be used to similar effect in the garden as a foil for other brightly coloured flowers.

The Breeder
René van Gaalen

Happily producing successful cut-flower ranges, René van Gaalen had no idea that his cultivars would make such an impact as garden plants. But a character like him can’t hide away forever.
